The Prevalence of Autism

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is presently conducting a demographic study of the occurrence of autism spectrum disorders in the United States. At the present time, their prevalence is at least 1 in 350, making this disability more common than childhood cancer, blindness, and Down Syndrome.  Autism spectrum disorders occur approximately four times more frequently in males than in females, apart from Rett Syndrome, which is found almost exclusively in females.

The number of diagnosed cases of autism is on the rise; the reason(s) for this is unclear. The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders seems to be consistent around the globe. Autism knows no racial, ethnic or social boundaries.  Family income, lifestyle, and educational levels do not appear to affect the chance of autism’s occurrence.
